The notion of the ‘white man’s burden’ is thoroughly depicted in Stevenson’s “The Beach of Falesa” by Captain John Wiltshire, the copra trader, who inhabits the island. Define the meaning of the expression and explain its relevance to the novella. What signs of the colonial character shows on Wiltshire? Explain how he presents the benign face of colonialism in comparison with other colonial characters in the story. Can we view Wiltshire as an extension to the character of Stevenson himself?
