This TMA is an essay based on chapters 3, 4 and 5 of Economics and Economic Changes text book. It is marked out of 100 and is worth 20% of the overall assessment component. This TMA requires you to apply the course concepts to your own experience and to discuss the economic implications of such an application. Please read the following article as a sample upon which you are going to structure your essay.
The TMA This TMA requires you to write a structured essay of no more than 1200 words, in which you attempt to answer the following questions:
1. Use demand and supply graph to explain and discuss the factors affecting the demand and supply for tobacco products 2. Discuss the different ways or policies that reduce smoking and shift the demand curve for cigarettes and other tobacco products to the left using proper examples.
Guidance notes for TMA: The above question should be discussed based on what you learned in Ch. 1 and Ch.2 listed in your course materials DD202A. You are going to discuss the different factors that affecting the demand for tobacco using essay structure with a clear-cut layout of an introduction, a body and a conclusion. In your introduction, you need to explain what determines the quantity of tobacco products that consumers demand. Also, do not forget to explain what determines the quantity of a good that sellers of tobacco products supply. Your introduction, as well as other parts of your TMA, must be based on up-to-date data with complete references. It is probably best to spend no more than 500 words on this part. (30 points) In the essay’s body, you need to answer question 2 by describing the role of pieces in market economies and then try to discuss the different policies that governments adopt to move the demand curve to the left. Your discussion should be based on clear examples supported with proper data. You will need to use your textbook as a reference and published data and information in order to answer the above two questions. It is expected to provide proper graphs that explain the effect policies on the demand for tobacco products. You may translate your data into diagrams and match the theory with the application you are discussing. This part of your essay has the weightiest part of the TMA and carries the highest proportion of marks. You should spend no more than 500 words on this part of the TMA. (50 points).
Your conclusion should include a summary of what you have discussed in your essay showing how the policy makers may benefit from your analysis. (200 words, 20 points).
The assessment of the quality of your essay will be based on how you convince the reader (grader) about your knowledge and understanding of the topic. Attempt to use your own words and avoid using a copy-paste. Your TMA should be attached with the following PT3form.
