Arab Open University Faculty of Business Studies B628: Managing1: Organizations and people Fall 2016 Tutor-Marked Assignment, TMA Cut-off date 17/12/2015 This tutor-marked assignment variedly draws from chapters 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. It consists of four (4) questions and accounts for 20% of the total grade assigned to the course. This assignment will be graded out of 100 marks. N.B: Your grade will be subject to grade deductions if you did not comply with the following criteria: • Proper referencing (Harvard referencing) - Deductions could be up to 5 %. • In-text referencing- Deductions could be up to 5 %. • Adherence to specified word count – Deductions could be up to 5 %. • Use of the E-library/External resources – Deductions could be up to 5 %.
In this TMA, you need to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the importance of the internal business workings. In short, what and how effective leaders should do?, types of leadership styles usually adopted and under what situations, differences between leadership and management, managing people approaches (recruitment, selection, communication, motivation, training and development, mentoring and performance counseling) that should be used in organizations and the effect of such approaches to outcome. In addition, how effective communication and feedback are executed in successful organizations. You are required to link various concepts learned in course B628 to the case studies.
In your answer, you should show critical, analytical and justification skills of the subject matter, rather than mere description. Your answer should be within the specified range of words and you must follow the Harvard Style of Referencing. You should present a well-structured and organized piece of work that is of your own creation. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and plagiarized work will receive Zero marks. Based on your understanding of the ASDA case study and B628 related concepts and theories answer the followings questions in an essay form. Question 1 (20-500 word) Identify leadership and management styles adopted at ASDA. Explain why different situations may require different leadership styles and how each style help to motivate employees.
Question 2 (30-600 word) Identify and evaluate motivation approaches applied in ASDA and comment on their impact on employees’ performance. Critically assess how effective you think the motivational techniques used by ASDA. Explain why you think particular techniques would or would not be effective.
Question 3 (30 mark – 600 word) Identify and appraise ASDA methods of attracting, recruiting and selecting candidates. Critically discuss benefits sought behind training and the developing of employees at ASDA and explain how ASDA strategy provides a career path benefit to the company.
Question 4 (20 mark – 300 word) Analyse the internal communication process used at ASDA. Analyze your findings with reference to any relevant materials provided in the B628 course. Provide your own critical reflection on your points of analysis.
