| A Tentative Outline for AA100A TMA
I. Introduction: Highlight the issues involved in setting the chosen literary figure (i.e. writer, dramatist, or poet) in his/her historical context. Very briefly introduce the person and discuss his/her historical period.
(No need for too many details about his/her life and history! This essay is not a biography! It is an analytical research paper about someone's different "reputations" and the important factors that have helped shape them!)
A. Discuss how this literary figure is influenced by his/her historical period and how he/she has impacted on his/her historical period.
B. Thesis Statement: Clearly mention the person's reputations and tell how those reputations are made.
II. Body Paragraph 1: A. Topic sentence: Discuss how issues of historical interpretation affected the construction of the chosen literary figure’s reputation. 1. Discuss how different historical periods view him/her differently. 2. Discuss what different reputations that person has had in different times/places. (You must support your ideas with hard facts/evidence from your sources. Paper needs proper documentation.)
III. Body Paragraph 2: A. Topic sentence: Comment on the issues involved in using historical evidence appropriately as far as the reputation construction of the chosen literary figure is concerned. 1. Mention the types of the historical sources that have established this person’s reputation. 2. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each source. 3. Discuss how one can make an objective and reliable judgment based on the different kinds of sources. (You must support your ideas with hard facts/evidence from your sources. Paper needs proper documentation.)
IV. Body Paragraph 3: A. Topic sentence: Investigate how social values/norms have affected the reputation construction of this literary figure. 1. Does he/she conform to the norms and values of the society? 2. How does his/her society perceive this person? (You must support your ideas with hard facts/evidence from your sources. Paper needs proper documentation.)
V. Body Paragraph 4: A. Topic sentence: Reflect on how views on tradition and innovation relate to this literary figure’s work and his/her reputation(s). 1. Briefly define tradition and innovation. 2. Is the literary figure following the traditions of his/her society or is he/she dismissing them?
VI. Conclusion: Very briefly mention the person's reputations and say which one is more accurate and true (based on historical evidence).
You are required to discuss and elaborate on the literary figure’s reputations closely and support your main ideas with details from your sources! Each paragraph is supposed to discuss a main topic and you must support that main idea with properly documented references to your sources! o Moreover, the paper should include a list of sources (print and electronic) at the end (“Works Cited” page) in addition to in-text citations as per the requirements of the LMS or Harvard Referencing Styles. Proper referencing is a serious academic requirement and skill and will be rewarded accordingly.
