Second Semester 2015-2016
Cut-off date: Week 10
TMA
Format and Word Count:
The student’s work should be presented in an ESSAY of around 1200 words.
Referencing:
The essay should include a list of references (print and electronic) at the end in addition to in-text referencing as per the requirements of the Harvard Referencing System. Proper referencing is a serious academic requirement and skill and will be rewarded accordingly.
Writing and Discussion Topic:
There is not a single culture that does not have its fair share of literary figures. Some of these figures are more celebrated than others and their fame is not static. The degree of fame varies from one time period to another depending on prevalent tastes and a host of social and economic conditions. These reputations are far from being uniform, with each of these figures having more than one “reputation”. Moreover, the process of reputation construction/formation is far from being a simple and straightforward process, as very little is involved in investigating the sources and accuracy of reputations. History is full of literary figures whose reputations in their days and in later days are much contested. As an example, we can refer to the renaissance Italian literary figures and statesmen Dante Alighieri and Niccolo Machiavelli, to the Egyptian writer and activist Nawal Al-Saadawi, to the Abbasid poet Abu Nuwas, to the English author D.H. Laurence, and the French thinker Voltaire. Choose one such figure and provide a study of his/her reputation and the issues involved in its making. Note that the literary figure should not be among those covered in Book 1. First, you should read to build your understanding of the complex theme of reputation before focusing your attention on material that would help you address the subthemes numbered 1-5 below, as they apply to your artist of choice:
1) Highlight the issues involved in setting the chosen literary figure in his/her historical context.

2) Discuss how issues of historical interpretation affected the construction of the chosen literary figure’s reputation.

3) Comment on the issues involved in using historical evidence appropriately as far as the reputation construction of the chosen literary figure is concerned.

4) Investigate how social values/norms impact the reputation construction of this literary figure.

5) Reflect on how views on tradition and innovation relate to the chosen literary figure’s work and his/her reputation(s).

Guidance on Addressing the Topic:
Before you embark on writing the essay, you need to read carefully Book 1 Reputations in order to familiarize yourself with the topic at large and make use of the skills presented in the book when writing your essay. You are strongly advised to consult sources on the topic and widen your knowledge of the topic under consideration, but it is of the utmost importance to document any words or ideas that are not your own. Once you have the material ready, it is advisable that you follow the steps (1-5) indicated in the section above to avoid omitting sub-questions. Although Unit 2 of Book 1 on the Elizabethan playwright Marlowe is of immediate relevance to the TMA topic, you should demonstrate your knowledge of the complexity of the overarching concept of reputation as presented in all the units and not limit treatment solely to a particular treatment appearing in a single unit.
Note on the PT3 Form:
The tutor’s comments that appear here on the PT3 form and on the script of the student’s TMA should be taken seriously by the student as mentioned in the Course Guide.
